Despite some thundery downpours on Monday, drier and sunnier conditions are likely as the week progresses, with temperatures set to remain in the mid-to-high 20s. Forecasts from meteorologists predict the chance of Britain experiencing a hot summer is now 45 per cent – 2.3 times the normal figure.
But it’s not all fun in the sun — as higher temperatures arrive it’s important to stay safe.
Here are some important things to know about heatstroke and how to spot its signs.
What is heatstroke?
Also known as sun stroke, put simply, it is when a person overheats, usually on account of prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Heatstroke occurs when a person’s temperature sky-rockets, reaching or exceeding, 100F (38C) – although you can also experience heatstroke with less.
At such a time, the brain, heart, kidneys and muscles are all at risk of damage. It is a potentially life-threatening condition and requires emergency treatment.
How to spot signs of heatstroke?
Symptoms in adults include a high body temperature, a change in mental state – for instance, confusion, drowsiness, slurred speech, irritability, delirium, seizures – nausea or vomiting, loss of consciousness, a racing heart, headache, rapid breath and/or flushed skin.
For babies and children, as Dr Luke Powles, Lead GP at Bupa Health Clinics, says: “Symptoms of heatstroke in babies and young children can show in a number of ways, such as becoming more restless and irritable.
“Other signs include becoming sleepy and floppy, paleness, sweating or clamminess, a rapid heart and breathing rate, dizziness, fainting, muscle cramps, intense thirst, nausea and vomiting.
“Also look out for heat rash, a red cluster of pimples or small blisters that usually occur on the neck and upper chest, in the groin and in the elbow creases.”
If you suspect heatstroke, how do you treat it?
Seek medical help immediately.
In the meantime, as Dr Powles advises, “Regardless of age, if someone is showing signs of [heatstroke], the first thing to do is cool them down. Move them into a cool place, get them to lie down and put their feet up, give them plenty of water and cool their skin with a cold pack, or towel.”
He adds: “Heat rashes are often harmless and may benefit from over-the-counter remedies offered by pharmacists, however, heatstroke can be more serious. If someone has heatstroke, get medical help as soon as possible.”
How to prevent heatstroke?
It’s not rocket science, but in the hot weather keep your child out of the sun, in a cool location, and ensure they are well-hydrated.
Dress them in loose clothing and be mindful of how much exercise they’re taking (i.e. not too much).
If being outside for a time is unavoidable, waterproof and sweat-resistant sunscreen is imperative – for you and them – of factor 50+.
