Design Classic: Arne Jacobsen's Cylinda Ashtray

Depending on who you listen to, this Cylinda ashtray was first created in either 1959, 1964 or 1967. In any of those years, smoking cigarettes was still acceptable in hospitality spaces. Arne Jacobsen designed these for the SAS Hotel Copenhagen, and they went into production by Stelton, a Danish manufacturer of stainless steel tableware.

These are a lot smaller than they look in the photos, by the way. There are two sizes: 7.5cm (3″) and 10cm (3.9″) in diameter.

That this design has outlasted the popularity of cigarettes is a testament to Jacobsen’s ability to create beauty. Stelton still produces these today.
