Most mysterious song on the Internet identified – DM News

The song known as the “Most Mysterious Song on the Internet” has finally been identified after a 17-year search. The track, which was recorded off a German radio station in 1984, is called “Subways of Your Mind” and was performed by a band named FEX. The mystery began in 2007 when a snippet of the song was uploaded to various internet forums by the sister of the person who originally recorded it.

Despite efforts to identify the song, no one was able to determine its name or origin. In 2019, the song gained wider attention when it was shared on Reddit, sparking a global effort to solve the mystery. Thousands of people joined the search, analyzing the song’s instruments, lyrics, and the singer’s accent for clues.

The breakthrough came when a Reddit user named “marijn1412” discovered an old newspaper article about a band called FEX while researching an event for up-and-coming bands in northern Germany during the 1980s.

Song mystery solved after 17 years

The user reached out to former FEX members, who confirmed the song’s identity and sent a version of the track.

Michael Hädrich, a former member of FEX who played keyboard, guitar, and provided backup vocals, expressed his surprise at the news. “I thought it was amazing that someone was interested in music by a band that was only successful regionally, if at all, and that was over 40 years ago,” he said. Hädrich revealed that the band members had been unaware of the online phenomenon surrounding their song.

They now plan to reissue “Subways of Your Mind” and are searching for the original recording. The identification of the “Most Mysterious Song on the Internet” marks a significant moment for music enthusiasts and highlights the power of collective online efforts to solve long-standing mysteries. As for FEX, their success may have been delayed by decades, but as Hädrich noted, “for us, it has just come suddenly.”
