The first time I remember using a computer was my grandad’s chunky desktop. I remember playing a Finding Nemo game, My Little Pony and becoming a wizard at Windows XP Paint. Sometimes, I would see my older sisters playing Habbo Hotel or talking to people on MSN and think, “Yes! One day I bloody pray I will be able to rot my brain whenever I feel like it on the internet.”
Eventually, I was allowed, but it freaks me out that I made my first email at six years old, got Facebook when I was eight (pen pal with Irish cousins was the excuse) and Snapchat, Instagram and Vine at 11. Yikes!
The task of choosing the 10 funniest things I’ve ever seen on the internet has altered my brain chemistry, as I am a chronically online piece of shit (I love it). So I’m sorry, everyone: I don’t think I can say this is my top 10 as it would maybe take me five years to figure that out, but here are the top 10 funny things that have had me howling in the last year, with a few nostalgic mentions.
1. This TikTok about memes

I feel this TikTok on a spiritual level because 50% of the references I make people don’t get. Not because I’m cool, edgy or on the pulse – I’m just chronically online and have an unhealthy amount of brain rot. But what a magical feeling when you can connect over a niche internet vid or meme. Pure community.
2. Party Rock

When I saw this, I FELT SEEN. As a gen Z trying to live in the flaming pile of shite that is the world right now, it can be hard to stay positive – but some 2010s iPod Nano-era beats really keep me energised and hopeful for the future. One day I hope everyone can just party rock together in peace and stop cooking the Earth for real. PLEASE, IT’S THE BARE MINIMUM.

Enya and Drew are the closest representation of how my mates and I talk. I bloody love listening to their podcast and watching their silliness. They capture that elder gen Z energy perfectly.
4. RuPaul: ‘A drag queen?’

Iconic in every way. No words. Love seeing Jimmy Fallon’s soul nearly leave his body.
5. That Bob Katter quote
A timeless video that I hope lives on for generations. I love to quote this at moments of awkwardness when the room needs a little boost; 75% of people get the reference and that’s enough for me.

6. Saturday Night Live: Natalie Portman’s rap
I remember watching this for the first time as a kid and just loved seeing Natalie Portman pop the fuck off. I always go back to this video whenever I’m thinking that I’m being too aggro or weird while writing a comedy song.
7. Saturday Night Live: alien abductions
Another great SNL moment. I really do watch this once a week. Kate McKinnon is A GENIUS. Seeing Ryan Gosling break character feeds my soul.
8. Caleb Hearon on the art of online bullying

First of all, Caleb Hearon is one of my fave comedians right now. He’s so talented and I really hope I can see him perform one day soon. As someone who’s been posting online for a while, I do have these moments when it’s just hilarious looking at mean comments. It feels basic when someone just calls you fat or annoying. HIT ME WHERE IT HURTS – be better with your insults, it’s just lazy, babe.
9. Melissa McCarthy’s bloopers from This is 40
MELISSA IS THE GOAT. I love watching these bloopers when I really am down in the dumps. Everything about her performance in every comedy film/series she does is ALWAYS brilliant. Seeing the other actors’ reactions just makes me cackle.
10. Hot Department: Movie Trailers That Give Away Every Plot Point
Hot Department always have me in stitches. I don’t know how the fuck they don’t have a TV show yet. It makes me sick – someone please give them a show. Once I was laughing at them so hard, someone genuinely thought I was crying and asked if I needed a moment. Go see them at the Melbourne comedy festival.
