AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Recent tariffs on the automotive industry are impacting dealers nationwide, including Amarillo.
With recent tariffs impacting both automobiles and automotive parts, consumers are left wondering if now is the time to buy.
On April 3, the new tariffs kicked in on all imported vehicles and parts. The rate is 25%, which will cause an increase on both new cars and the parts that make up the vehicle.
Some customers may want to purchase a used vehicle instead of new to not take the hit in their wallet, but according to one Amarillo dealer, that may not be the case.
“Those parts all come from somewhere else. Unfortunately in order to keep the used cars in the condition we want them in, the price is going to go up on parts to maintain them, which is also going to increase the price of the vehicle to sell,” said Taylor Burget, general manager Mazda of Amarillo.
Burget has seen customers who were waiting to finalize a deal decide to back out due to the uncertainty of the tariffs.
Used car values will also be going up due to the tariffs.
“Trade in vehicles, those are all going to be worth more money. so yes where you may see a tariff on the new vehicle, if you’re able to counteract that with the money that you could get from the up tick in the used car market on your trade in, you should get a nice balance,” said Burget.
Burget says new vehicles that receive the $600 to $700 increase will be applied into the customers trade value to make them feel at peace about the tarriff.
