anonym studio’s all-white house in bangkok adopts scandinavian minimalism

scandinavian minimalism informs saimai house in bangkok

Saimai House by Anonym Studio, sited in its namesake neighborhood in Bangkok, abstracts the pitched-roof house form with an all-white exterior inspired by Scandinavian minimalism. Created for a couple seeking indoor-outdoor connections and a breezy, open-plan layout, the residence emphasizes privacy without sacrificing openness. Yet, the interior experience is enlivened with abundant inside-outside encounters, as well as cross views and long lines of sight that forge interaction among its inhabitants. Throughout, the house, set against a sprawling green lawn, integrates existing trees into its plan and features a climate-responsive gable roof with a 15-degree incline suited to seasonal rainfall.

anonym studio creates a blend between privacy and openness

Saimai House belongs to a couple who requested a residence that could be cooled with breezes and spaces that were not isolated from one another. Previously occupied by a northward-facing structure, the plot neighbors a three-story house to the south, which informed the placement of functional spaces such as the wet kitchen, bathrooms, and storage rooms on the ground floor. In contrast, Anonym Studio positioned the core living and private spaces inward, oriented toward the north-facing garden. Sizable existing trees were preserved and incorporated into the plan, offering shade and enhancing the indoor-outdoor experience. These trees are visible from key spaces such as the first-story common areas and the master bedroom upstairs.

To address the couple’s need for privacy — particularly significant due to their roles in the entertainment industry — the house features a solid wall along the southern elevation, shielding the interior from the street. The architects have marked the entrance elevation with a sharp, pitched-roof silhouette, which runs parallel to the garden, creating a dynamic spatial flow.

Saimai House’s rectangular layout — derived from the site’s context — unfolds with a carefully designed sequence of spaces for optimal user experience. A garden greets the homeowners as they park their cars and enter through the east wing, and the front door opens into a semi-open-plan living area, connected to a double-height volume that houses the dining area and staircase.

Anonym Studio’s design strategically minimizes heat gain through its orientation, with the shorter sides of the form facing east and west. Bathrooms placed on the east-facing facade act as buffers to the bedrooms, while the abundant greenery, both inside and out, provides shade and natural cooling. The house’s alabaster facade and light timber interiors reflect the owners’ penchant for Scandinavian minimalism, reinforcing the calming and modern atmosphere. Additionally, the design subtly incorporates symbolic elements referencing the couple’s profession. Circular windows, fitted with lighting, evoke twinkling stars at night, while concealed indirect lighting enhances the facade’s glow. This detail nods to the concept of an ‘illuminating light or star,’ underscoring the owners’ popularity and profession while blending into the minimalist aesthetic.
