BP (NYSE:BP) and Equinor (NYSE:EQNR) said Friday they submitted a joint bid to build a second stage of their Beacon Wind project in response to New York state’s third round of offshore wind energy solicitations.
The companies said their proposed 1,360 MW Beacon Wind 2 project, located 60 miles off the eastern tip of Long Island, would be able to power ~1M New York homes.
BP (BP) and Equinor (EQNR) already are developing three wind projects offshore New York – Empire Wind 1 and 2, and Beacon Wind 1 – with a total capacity of 3,300 MW.
Beacon Wind recently purchased the site of the Astoria Gas Turbines, with the potential to bring offshore wind from Beacon Wind 1 and 2 directly to New York City.
New York state has set a goal of generating at least 70% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources by 2030.
Eversource Energy and Ørsted, and a GE-led group also have submitted proposals for New York’s most recent offshore wind solicitations (I, II).
