Design In Motion reconfigures PN House’s layout
Design In Motion breathes new life into a 20-year-old residence, crafting a green courtyard and living space attuned to Thailand‘s tropical climate. This Bangkok housing development’s renovation reimagines a two-story home to suit the evolving lifestyle of its occupants, a couple, five cats, and a dog. Central to the project is the creation of a dynamic ‘living space’ that harmonizes with the region’s climate, blending seamlessly with the love for wooden materials. The frontage undergoes a significant shift, with a four-car parking space relocated to the side, giving way to an expansive garden and a redesigned entrance foyer. A secondary entrance from the new garage caters to the private needs of the owners, while the main entrance guides visitors through an elegant path to the central tropical courtyard.

living spaces assemble around the central courtyard
The design team removes the solid walls on the first floor, replacing them with a one-meter wooden walkway encircling the inner courtyard. This not only enhances accessibility but also delineates distinct zones for work, pantry, and living areas, each opening to the courtyard. The open kitchen takes center stage, reflecting the owners’ passion for cooking and coffee. A new staircase near the back entrance leads to the second floor, housing private family areas and the master bedroom. The master bedroom enjoys a central position with views of the courtyard, while the guest living room becomes a playground for the five feline companions. The old staircase leads to a spacious semi-outdoor terrace, transforming the former bedroom into a versatile living area overlooking the front garden.

Burmese teakwood and cedar enhance tropical aesthetics
The design language exudes tropical vibes through the prevalent use of Burmese teakwood. Earthy tones skim-coat the exterior walls, harmonizing with the wooden hues, while a cedar shingle roof crowns the structure. The first floor’s configuration boasts sliding aluminum doors for an open connection to the courtyard, fostering a close-to-nature ambiance. In contrast, the second level maintains a more private atmosphere with scaled-down wooden windows, ensuring privacy without compromising ventilation.
