da.ch. crafts layered stone-paved landscape for casa tres patis in catalunya

vegetation and stone paving surround Casa Tres Patis by DA.CH.

DA.CH. Architecture and Landscape Workshop designed the landscape for Casa Tres Patis, an 850 sqm residence in Albons, Catalunya, designed by TWO/BO and built by DRIM Medi Ambient. The landscape strategy establishes a direct relationship between the architectural form and the surrounding territory through a spatial and material dialogue. The design defines three open areas—representing orchards, meadows, and the sea—set within denser perimeter vegetation. This configuration frames views and guides visual movement across the site while offering a degree of enclosure. The planting scheme creates a dual reading of the garden: as both an integrated whole and as a sequence of interconnected experiences.

Upon entry, a courtyard planted with lemon trees defines the threshold. A large linden tree is positioned centrally, offering shade and acting as a focal point within the spatial sequence. Intersecting visual corridors connect distinct zones of the site while enabling orientation across different axes. These views link the house to the landscape and extend toward the eastern horizon, where the Empordà plain meets the Mediterranean. Photographer José Hevia captures the project.

Gradual Transitions Merge Casa Tres Patis with Landscape

Circulation is defined through a gradual transition of paving materials. Stone paving, composed of locally sourced mineral material, begins near the residence and slowly diminishes in presence as it merges with Mediterranean vegetation deeper in the garden. This sequence emphasizes the shift from built space to natural surroundings.

For the layout, DA.CH. Architecture and landscape workshop organizes vegetation to frame both axial and transverse views. One axis channels the perspective outward, aligning with the larger landscape. A secondary, crosswise axis reinforces the garden’s role as an internalized landscape feature, visible and accessible from within the house. Two primary systems—vegetal and mineral—structure the garden’s composition. These are integrated by the use of transitional surfaces, where stone elements are gradually overtaken by low-maintenance planting. Over time, this results in a unified landscape system that merges constructed and natural elements through deliberate spatial gradation. The design supports multiple modes of engagement, emphasizing both movement through the site and visual access from within the residence, while anchoring the landscape in the broader regional context.
