Fortune is seeking a talented editor to lead our autos and transportation coverage. In this role, you will set the agenda by assigning stories about the people, strategies, and stocks of the biggest Fortune 500 transportation companies, while also reporting and writing.
This editor will report to our global head of news and build a new team from the ground up.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable editing stories as well as writing pieces about vehicles, industry trends, company executives, and unique, fascinating angles into these topics (and others) that you won’t read elsewhere.

You will:
- Be able to show an impressive track record of editing and generating scoops and analysis on autos and transportation topics that are relevant to our audience of leaders.
- Enjoy constantly networking with CEOs, executives and sources inside auto and transportation companies to cultivate stories and scoops.
- Be comfortable jumping in to write stories as needed.
- Appear on stage at Fortune events to interview industry leaders.
- Consistently generate story ideas, from quick news hits to profiles and magazine features.
- Be comfortable juggling a mixture of stories, working on tight deadlines, and pursuing original reporting in a fast-paced newsroom.
- Be able to work closely with the managing editor to recruit and hire a team of reporters to help build autos coverage for the newsroom.
- Be able to create charts using tools like Datawrapper.
You have…
- At least 5 years of full-time newsroom experience, preferably in a similar role.
- A digital-first mindset and voracious reading habits.
- Interest in autos coverage and the desire to define the beat.
- The ability to work quickly and collaboratively as part of a tight-knit, fast-paced team.
- Fortune’s U.S. headquarters is in New York City. This role is based in the U.S., and candidates should have authorization to work in the U.S. Candidates based in the NYC area or near one of our other offices will be required to work in the office 4 days per week.
