Aussie couple Mai and Mason are going viral for sharing their rogue budgeting tip that has divided the internet.
The couple run the successful TikTok account Saving For Boba, where they share their quirky money hacks and comedy – it’s hard to know which category their Christmas advice falls into
Often, their money ideas go viral, and they’ve amassed over 3 million likes. Their Christmas “life hack” has received over 300,000 views, but it’s quickly become controversial.

Mai showed herself purchasing a Christmas tree but explained that it was “free” because of the store’s 30-day return policy.
The hack is that you can purchase a Christmas tree when you need it during the festive season and then return it when you no longer need it.
Get it? Free.
Of course, you’ll probably need another tree the year after, but you can rinse and repeat the activity and never actually fork out any money for a Christmas tree. So, if you’ve got the time to stand around buying and returning items, this could be the hack for you.
The idea is technically cost-effective, although it does require a fair amount of effort. Plenty of people in the comment section weren’t impressed by the suggestion.

One called it “wasteful consumption”, another claimed it was wasting workers’ time and showed a lack of “common decency”, and someone declared it was straight-up “stealing,” another complained it wasn’t helpful, just “pathetic.”
Someone said doing that act would bring you “bad karma” and another claimed it was a “horrible” thing to do.
While another said if someone did this, it showed they had no “class.” It was getting very serious in the comment section.
Not everyone was taking the life hack so seriously; someone told everyone to relax because they were “pretty sure” it was a joke.
Another instructed people to “relax” and “laugh” because the couple were joking around.
Others took the life hack seriously but were all for the sneaky way to save cash.
One said that Kmart has a 60-day return policy, so people have “heaps” of time if they need to return it.
Another said this was a classic example of ‘ “girl math”, and one simply called it “genius.”
