Guwahati: The careers of many students in Manipur are at stake as they could not register for the Common University Entrance Test-Postgraduate (CUET-PG) for admissions to postgraduate courses due to internet suspension.
TOI reached out to a group of students from Dhanamanjuri College of Arts in Imphal and found that while some of them missed the registration altogether, many others could not pay their fees.
The deadline for CUET-PG registration and for receiving fees online has been extended to May 11 and correction in particulars of online application forms can be done between May 12 and 13. But this is not going to help the students of Manipur who have urged the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Centre to intervene in the matter. Internet remains suspended in Manipur since May 3.
Lerina Maimom, a final-year student at Dhanamanjuri College of Arts, was planning to complete the registration on May 3, two days ahead of the previous last date (May 5) for CUET-PG registration. Neither had she any clue that an ethnic violence would erupt in the state nor did she imagine that the internet would be suspended for 10 days. Amid the serenity and calmness of Haokha Mamang Leikai village in Thoubal district near Imphal, she was preparing hard for the final semester BA exam likely to be held in June. “My goal was to get a master’s degree. But many of us are in deep trouble now as there is no possibility to fill up the form. By the time the internet will be restored in Manipur, the last late of submission will be over,” she told TOI from her village.
The Meitei-inhabited village is peaceful, but Lerina’s family is anxious as the road to higher education may come to an end for her.
Her batchmate, Thounaojam Meenshini Devi, simply needs to pay the fee to complete the formalities but no solution is in sight for her.
Brinda Heikham, another Manipur student, needs to make a correction in her form to choose more options to pursue master’s in English. Previously, she had selected only Manipur University but now wants to apply to more universities.
