Lotus Goes After Porsche With 905-Horsepower Emeya Electric Sedan

Lotus has announced a new high-powered electric sedan called the Emeya. To be sold alongside the Eletre SUV, the new car promises almost one thousand horsepower and a 0-60 mph time under three seconds.

With the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT set firmly in its sights, the Emeya is the first four-door car to carry a Lotus badge since the Calton from 1990. The Emeya is part of Lotus’ lifestyle-oriented range (rather than its British-built sports cars), which all share the company’s Electric Premium Architecture platform and are built in China.

Intended as a fast but comfortable and long-legged grand tourer, the Emeya will be available in several configurations, with the all-wheel-drive flagship having two electric motors and a top speed of 155 mph. The car can charge its battery at up to 350 kW when attached to an equally powerful DC charger. Lotus says at this rate the Emeya can gain up to 93 miles of range in five minutes. A near-empty battery can be filled to 80 percent in 18 minutes.

Described as a ‘hyper GT’, the Emeya’s performance will see it go head-to-head with the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, which also has a top speed of 155 mph, a 0-60 mph time of under three seconds and 350 kW charging. Lotus hasn’t yet revealed the Emeya’s range, but says it has a 102 kWh battery pack (slightly larger than the Taycan’s) and will offer a range similar to that of the 304 to 373 miles of the Eletre SUV.

As well as impressive straight-line performance, Lotus says the Emeya has electronically controlled air suspension with sensors that read the road surface 1,000 times per second and respond to create as smooth a ride as possible.

Aerodynamic features include an active front grille, rear diffuser and rear spoiler, all of which move to either deliver extra downforce for cornering stability, or reduce drag and improve driving range.

The interior includes a fabric made from repurposed fibers from the fashion industry, Lotus says, as well as aluminum, Alcantara and Nappa leather. The cabin also features a KEF sound system with support for Dolby Atmos 3D surround sound.

Revealed in New York City this week, the Emeya is expected to go into production in 2024. Lotus hasn’t revealed a price or market availability, but says more information about the car will be shared in the fourth quarter of 2023.
