Man surrenders in killing early Saturday – McComb Enterprise Journal

A shooting on Virginia Avenue resulted in the death of one man early Saturday and charges against another who surrendered hours later.

Corey Poindexter, 46, of McComb, died of multiple gunshot wounds in the shooting in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue around 1 a.m., Coroner Wally Jones said.

Police Chief Juan Cloy said detectives identified Bernard Van Buren, 23, as a suspect.

The shooting erupted out of an apparent domestic dispute, Cloy said, without elaborating. He said the two men were not related but knew each other.

Van Buren came to the police station with family members around 4 a.m. to surrender, Cloy said.

Van Buren has been booked into the Pike County jail on a murder charge.

“I want to thank the family. They all came to support him turning himself in and I really wish more families would do that,” Cloy said. “That was a very brave move and I want to personally thank that family for what they did.

“They were calm and cool, they were remorseful, but I really appreciate that.”

Cloy expressed his sympathies to both men’s families and concern for the community.

“It’s a tragedy for the community, not just both of these families,” he said.
