New credit card rules: HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, other banks customers cannot make credit card bill payments using CRED, PhonePe, Paytm

As of July 1, customers with credit cards from major banks like HDFC Bank and Axis Bank will no longer have the option to use third-party applications such as CRED, PhonePe, Amazon Pay, and Paytm to settle their credit card bills.

This change is due to the lack of integration of these apps with the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This means that customers will need to make their credit card bill payments through alternative channels or directly through the banks’ own platforms.

Major credit card rule changes of big banks that will come into effect in July: SBI Card, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Citibank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated that all credit card payments be routed through the Bharat Bill Pay System from July 1, 2024. This will significantly impact credit card bill payments that are processed in India. Fintech businesses like Cred, PhonePe, and BillDesk are among those bracing for substantial disruption.

The Economic Times stated in a June 2024 news report that HDFC Bank, which has 20 million credit cards, and Axis Bank, which has 14 million, have not yet enabled the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS).

Thus, non-compliant lenders such as Cred and PhonePe will no longer be permitted to handle card dues for them or any other BBPS member platform. Industry insiders told ET that the fintechs are concerned about a significant decline in transaction volumes.
Credit cardholders have three options for paying their monthly bills: auto-debit requirements, netbanking (NEFT or IMPS), and third-party applications. The third-party application process will end on June 30; in the meantime, the first two modes of operation will continue.
