MCDONALD’S has revealed it is shaking up its Happy Meal offering with a new limited-edition theme.
The fast food chain is launching a Sonic 3 Happy Meal box with brand new toys to celebrate the launch of the latest Sonic the Hedgehog film.
The themed boxes will contain one of nine new toys, while families will also be able to bag up to 30% off cinema tickets by scanning the QR code on the Happy Meal box.
The new toys include Sonic 3 characters such as Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and Shadow.
To get the cinema savings, families need to scan the code and register, at which point the discount will be valid for one month.
On the side of each Happy Meal box, there will also be QR codes so kids can access extra Sonic games on their smartphones.
And, for kids who prefer reading, there are two book options: I can be a brave mountaineer and I can discover the world.
Sonic the Hedgehog was originally a character in a video game series before it was brought to the big screen, so retro gaming fans will love the new figurines.
Happy Meals are smaller-sized meals aimed at children and are priced around £3.59, including mains like fish fingers, chicken nuggets or veggie dippers, plus a side and a drink such as water or a fruit shoot.
Other changes
The new Happy Meals aren’t the only change at Maccies this month.
The restaurant chain also announced a raft of changes to its menu including launching a brand new wrap and McFlurry flavour.
There is a new katsu crispy wrap and grilled katsu wrap. Both cost £3.49 for a single item or £5.29 as part of a meal, or £1.99 as a single item every Wednesday.
There is also a BBQ Ranch Stack burger, which is on menus for the first time at £5.19 on its own or £6.99 in a meal deal.
Meanwhile McDonald’s has brought in a Milkyway McFlurry, which will contain milk chocolate stars and malt-flavoured pieces.
Mozzarella dippers are also back for £2.39. The dippers consist of mozzarella and emmental cheese with a smoky caramelised onion-flavoured breadcrumb coating.
And the BBQ Smokehouse McCrispy has returned after last being on menus in September.
Our reporter Sam Walker tried the new items and said the new McFlurry is the best flavour yet.
However, he wasn’t blown away by the burger, which he said had BBQ sauce that was too sweet and overpowering.
Here is the full list of items added this month:
- new katsu crispy or grilled wrap – £3.49 single item, £5.29 with a meal and £1.99 on Wednesday
- new Milkyway McFlurry – £2.19
- new BBQ ranch stack burger – £5.19 single item, £6.99 with a meal
