BROCKTON — Brockton remains under a flood watch through Wednesday afternoon after snowmelt and rain affected the area Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
“Heavy rain may fall on a deep primed snowpack leading to the melt increasing. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Snow clogged drains may also contribute to the flood risk in poor drainage and urban areas,” the NWS wrote in a flood watch Tuesday evening.
A flood warning was also issued at 8:32 a.m. Wednesday for the Taunton River near Bridgewater, affecting both Bristol and Plymouth Counties.
Flood watch: How much rain causes Brockton to flood? Which areas of Brockton flood first?
“The river is expected to rise above flood stage this afternoon and continue rising to a crest of 9.6 feet early Friday morning,” the NWS wrote. “At 9.0 feet, backwater flooding from the Taunton River will cause flooding of lower Purchade Brook in Middleboro. This will cause Woloski Park to become impassable by most vehicles for an extended period of time,” they continued.
“The last of the heaviest rain will be exiting eastern Massachusetts within the next hour or so,” the NWS Boston wrote on X at 6:10 a.m. this morning “Otherwise, the focus shifts to the runoff and significant river and stream flooding that is already underway,” they wrote.
