reiulf ramstad perches six tiny cabins among ‘mountaineering capital of norway’

steep housing: cabins for nature lovers in Åndalsnes

Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter has completed a new residential project titled Steep Housing (Bratte Boliger), located in the town of Åndalsnes, Møre og Romsdal, Norway. The project consists of six timber cabins, situated in a region known for its breathtaking scenery and as a hub for outdoor activities, especially climbing.

Åndalsnes is often referred to as the ‘Mountaineering Capital of Norway’ due to its proximity to the Romsdalen Valley and the surrounding peaks. Home to Europe’s tallest rock face, the Trollveggen, this postcard town has become a prime destination for tourists and adventurers seeking access to renowned hiking and climbing routes, such as the famous Romsdalseggen Ridge. Its unique geography, surrounded by mountains and fjords, has long inspired architects to create structures that respond to the dramatic landscape.

celebrating the dramatic norwegian Landscape

Steep Housing was developed by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter to perch atop the steep terrain of Åndalsnes, reflecting local architectural traditions and environmental considerations. Each of the six cabins is carefully positioned to offer spectacular views of the Romsdalen Valley while maintaining a minimal impact on the surrounding natural landscape. The design team‘s approach emphasizes respect for the terrain, incorporating stilts to elevate the cabins, preserving the natural topography below.

The cabins offer a compact yet highly functional living space, each measuring eighty square meters. The interiors are designed to optimize space, featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a combined kitchen and living area. Despite their compact size, the layout ensures a sense of comfort and practicality, with ample storage provided by generous wardrobes. The homes are designed for modern living without sacrificing quality or connection to the natural surroundings.

Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter Draws from Local Traditions

Inspired by local Norwegian building practices, Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter’s Steep Housing draws on a tradition of using elevated structures to adapt to steep and rugged landscapes. The use of stilts not only integrates the cabins into their environment but also preserves the site’s natural character, avoiding unnecessary disruption to the land. This approach aligns with the broader architectural goals of the design team, where simplicity and site-specific design take precedence.

The material palette for the project reflects Nordic design principles, focusing on sustainability. Natural, low-carbon materials are used throughout, with an emphasis on durability and environmental responsibility. The cabins incorporate technical solutions that minimize energy consumption, further enhancing their sustainability credentials. The design demonstrates a commitment to creating residential developments that respect both the local ecosystem and broader environmental goals.
