Explosions shook Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine, as local officials said early on Tuesday that Russia’s invading forces in their latest overnight air strikes pummelled the country with nearly 30 missiles.

“Residential buildings were hit,” Lviv’s mayor Andriy Sadovyi said in a social media post that included a video of him outside a massive crater and bombed-out apartment building.

“Fortunately, there were no casualties,” he added. “Unfortunately, there is a lot of damage. More than 100 apartments were damaged, more than 500 windows were broken and a kindergarten was destroyed.”

Officials reported at least three fatalities from strikes further north in the region of Volyn. Lviv and Volyn both border Poland.

Ukraine’s air force said 16 of about 28 missiles were intercepted.
