Sam Altman says OpenAI is capping ‘Ghibli’ AI image requests—here’s why

OpenAI’s new image generation feature has sparked excitement among users, but chief executive Sam Altman revealed on X that it is putting significant strain on the company’s GPU resources.

The GPUs, crucial for processing AI-generated images, are under heavy load and overheating. To manage demand, OpenAI is introducing temporary rate limits.

As part of these restrictions, users on the free tier of ChatGPT will soon be limited to generating three images per day. Altman emphasised that this is a temporary measure while the company works to enhance performance.

He also acknowledged that some image requests are being rejected despite complying with OpenAI’s policies. “The team is actively working to fix these issues as quickly as possible,” he said.

Studio Ghibli, founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, is a renowned Japanese animation studio. It is recognised for its hand-drawn animation, intricate backgrounds, and emotionally rich storytelling.
