With Fallout’s nomination, video game adaptations are serious Emmy contenders
Prime Video’s Fallout received a total of 16 nominations, including Oustanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Walton Goggins.
The nominations are the latest example of video game adaptations overcoming their lackluster reputations of the past, with critically acclaimed series like Fallout and HBO/Max’s The Last of Us shifting the perception.
For its part, HBO/Max’s The Last of Us received 23 Emmy nominations last year, further proving that there’s an appetite for more prestige video game adaptations.
Indigenous talent and actors of color were recognized
It’s a big year for Native American talent, with Hulu’s Reservation Dogs, Under the Bridge and True Detective: Night Country receiving various nominations.
Under the Bridge’s Lily Gladstone and True Detective: Night Country’s Kali Reis both received nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie, making history as the first Indigenous women nominated for Emmys in the acting categories. They are only the second and third Indigenous actors to be recognized in the entire 76 years of the Emmys. Gladstone’s Emmy nomination comes fresh after her win at the Golden Globes last year for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Though Annenberg Inclusion Initiative research from last year shows that Native American representation is still lacking in Hollywood, it seems like the Television Academy is recognizing those performances more, especially after award ceremonies have previously been called out for not nominating actors of color and “performative diversity.”
Following the historic wins of Beef last year for Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, this year saw another feat for Asian representation with Shōgun. Among the series nominations, Japanese actors Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada received nominations in the lead acting categories. Meanwhile, Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira received supporting actor nods.
