If you like to scour for restaurants off the beaten path, look no further, as Tripadvisor has just unveiled the UK’s best ‘secret spots’ – as well as ones further afield.
Every year, the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards unveil top spots covering various categories of eatery, including Fine Dining, Everyday Eats, Date Night and, most intriguing, Hidden Gems.
It’s come at just the right time, as according to new research, almost two thirds of global travellers (62%) are most excited about food when it comes to their next trip away – whether that’s abroad or a staycation.
So where do the ‘hidden gems’ lie in the UK?
The top spot goes to Ganesha Authentic Indian Cuisine, a family-run restaurant in Bristol – followed by Osteria, an authentic Italian in Shrewsbury, in second position.
South Asian cuisine dominates this year’s list, with Gurkha Bar and Restaurant Musselburgh in a number five, and London’s The India – Best of the City in sixth place.
Elsewhere, venues from all over England take up the other top 10 rankings –including restaurants in Dorset, Wiltshire, Bath and Derbyshire.

In terms of more lesser-known finds, a restaurant in Warsaw takes the top position for 2023 in the global rankings.
Restauracja Future & Wine scooped first place for the ‘hidden gems’ category for its Polish fare.
However, it’s Vietnam that stands out the most in this category globally, with three of the top 25 world spots, including Hanoi Food Culture in Hanoi at number eight, Thìa Gỗ Restaurant in Da Nang at position nine, and Nhan’s Kitchen in Hoi An at 11th.

It’s worth pointing out that Tripadvisor also named the top traveller ranked ‘everyday eats’ in the UK – for those looking for a meal that doesn’t come with a Michelin price tag.
Yorkshire tops the chart in this category, with an No.1 new entry for 2023 in Doncaster, followed by Middlesbrough’s Rio Brazilian Steakhouse in second – climbing one place from last year. Edinburgh also dominates the leaderboard for this, taking three out of the top 10 spots for the UK.

For those looking to splash the cash for a special occasion, 10 UK ‘fine dining’ eateries have also been named in 2023’s rankings.
Restaurants in Ambleside, Padstow and Edinburgh take the top three spaces – and the rest of the list also stretches across far and wide across the UK, with only one London restaurant on the list.
