Prada Mode returns for its eleventh edition, taking to Abu Dhabi’s MiZa neighborhood to host a four-day pop-up in collaboration with US-based artist Theaster Gates. Prada’s itinerant cultural platform taps the artist for the third time, who here draws upon his ongoing explorations of art, architecture, and performance — and their intersections — to design a spatial and sonic experience manifesting a spectrum of dualities and cultural resonances.
A multisensory architectural intervention in the warehouse structure hosts the work, divided conceptually and physically into two distinct environments by a cylindrical structure positioned within a square. The inner sanctum is conceived to host acoustic music sets and doubles as a large conversation pit, while, in contrast, the surrounding space outside is brighter and livelier to host live DJ sets and live performances. The intervention runs from 11th to 14th February, 2025.

Theaster Gates, known for his explorations of sculpture, architecture, urban planning, and material culture, has curated a setting that engages with the spiritual and aesthetic traditions of the region, with a focus on dualities. The work examines ideas of elegant austerity, historic craft, and sacred immediacy, as it reaffirms the minimal and analogue amidst the cultural dominance of technology and AI today.
Speaking about the project, he states: ‘This space is a reflection on the spiritual possibilities of quietude, the power of gathering, the contiguity between the aesthetics of the past and their relevance for the future, and reverence for Arab women.’ The work is also positioned as a counterpoint to the growing dominance of AI and digital cultures, and our dependency on technology which he suggests governs our reality. In response, the artist says, ‘my concept for Prada Mode Abu Dhabi is an homage to our interiority, the human hand, and our spiritual contributions to the rich cultural histories of this region.’

Prada Mode’s musical program for both zones has been co-curated by Theaster Gates alongside NTS, the globally recognized radio and creative platform founded by Femi Adeyemi. Additionally, cultural programming by Myrna Ayad highlights local and regional talent, hosting performances and discussions focused on the expressions, traditions, intelligence, creativity, and contributions contributions of Arab women across various creative disciplines. Chef Salam Daqqaq’s culinary offerings complement the artistic and sonic experience, drawing on the diversity and traditions of the UAE’s diasporic communities.
