Urgent warning to drivers not to press one button to de-ice windscreen

Motorists have been warned not to press one button while trying to de-ice their windscreen as snowy conditions hit the UK.

The air circulation button in a car, often labelled with a symbol of a car and a circular arrow inside it, controls the flow of air inside your vehicle.

This feature is particularly helpful in summer, as it helps cool the interior more quickly.

Additionally, it’s effective for blocking outside pollutants, exhaust fumes, pollen, and unpleasant odors from entering the cabin.

According to one car servicing and tyre business, it’s better turned off in the winter, reports Joe.co.uk.

Eden Tyres said: “As a general rule, when it’s cold outside, make sure the recirculation button is switched off.

“The air-recirculation button is best to use alongside your AC during warm weather. During cooler weather it doesn’t have many benefits and can even be detrimental.

“Some drivers think it makes sense to not have ‘all that cold air coming in’ if they are using heaters in winter. However it’s best to have your air recirculation turned off.”

The Derbyshire-based business continued: “The main downside of the air-recirculation button is that it traps humidity inside the car, which results in misted windscreens, especially when the air is cold outside and in wet weather.

“If your vehicle is fully loaded with passengers, it can also cause it to be stuffy and may make you drowsy.”

The crucial advice comes as many parts of the UK are likely to witness snow and icy conditions as the Met Office issued yellow alerts across the country.

Overnight snow in Northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and South West England, along with below-freezing temperatures, has meant icy conditions this morning throughout the UK.
