Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of January 17, 2025 – Culturess

Video game news is on fire this week, and not just because the Nintendo Switch 2 was officially announced. Oh no. We have plenty of video game news this week, including some long-rumored games… possibly coming out this year!

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is officially done

Yes, folks, we wrote about it a few weeks ago, but Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is no more. Rocksteady gave us the last update and now there are no more in the future. The latest update, which launched on Tuesday, gave us the final player, Deathstroke, and the new “offline mode.”

It’s always sad to see a game come to an end, but Suicide Squad‘s life has been pretty bumpy (at best).

3 gaming studios have already shut down in 2025

We’d be remiss not to report on the bad news as well as the good. And even I didn’t realize this: Already three gaming studios have shut down in 2025.

We know the state of the gaming world isn’t the greatest and there’s almost always some sort of downsizing or closure, but this seems crazy that three have closed down in just the last three weeks.

The studios in question are Counterplay Games (who released Godfall), Toadman Interactive (which provided support for the Warhammer Vermentide series), and FreeJam (which put out Robocraft 2).

Sega filed a new trademark… for Ecco the Dolphin

Color us intrigued and a little miffed. Sega has reportedly filed trademarks for both Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco back in December. There hasn’t been any news on this series since the last release in 2000, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future.

I don’t know what this seriousness could hold for us in 2025 and beyond, but it does give me a reason to post one of my favorite skits from “Hey Ash Whatcha Playin'” with the lovely Ashly and Anthony Burch (Ashly you most famously know as Aloy, Anthony’s done a lot of writing for video games and also DMs the “Dungeons and Daddies” podcast):

The Nintendo Switch 2 is officially announced

And they didn’t name it the Super Nintendo Switch, those cowards! We have a full write-up of the reveal already. There’s not much to be said so far officially, though you can find a lot of speculative articles dissecting the short video; it’s bigger with a new Mario Kart and comes out sometime in 2025.

We’ll get more information in the next Nintendo Direct on April 2nd and hopefully some specs on what the internal hardware entails.

Why haven’t we gotten a new Bloodborne yet?

It’s the question that every Souls fan asks on what’s probably a daily basis. Why is there no new Bloodborne? Whether that’s a sequel, a remake, or a remaster, the possibilities (and the money that would follow) would be endless. Fans would kill for anything Bloodborne.

Well, in an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Shuhei Yoshida (the PlayStation legend) commented that he thinks Miyazaki is just too busy for it. It’s one of the games he truly loves and Yoshida doubts he’d want anyone else to touch it. You can read the full quote here. Of course, it’s all speculation, but his reasoning is pretty sound. And disappointing for Souls fans.

Still, we can hold out hope!

Is Hollow Knight: Silksong going to be a launch title for the Switch 2?

Okay, take all of this with a huge grain of salt, but dang if we don’t want all of this to be true because we want Hollow Knight: Silksong so very badly. But buckle in for an insane conspiracy theory that feels too good to be true.

Hollow Knight co-creator William Pellen has changed his Twitter account. He now is a photo of chocolate cake (from a recipe posted on April 2, 2024, which is the same date as the upcoming Nintendo Direct to discuss Switch 2 details) and also tweeted to keep our eyes closed for something big on the 16th, which was the Switch 2 announcement.

He also changed his name to “Little Bomey,” which is close to Little Boomey, a wine made in Adelaide Hills, and Team Cherry is based in Adelaide and also appears to be from April 2024. The phrase “keep your eyes closed” is from an Imagine Dragons song that was also released in April 2024.

Basically, it sounds like he’s telling us to hold our breath until that Nintendo Direct on April 2. Can we dare to hope that Silksong will be a launch title with the Nintendo Switch 2? Now that would be something.
