As a country that used to be part of someone else’s non-consensual property, we know the difference between being a country’s colony and a state. So, when Lord Trump of Mar-a-Lago suggested this week that Canada join the US as its 51st state, we think it’s a charming idea. The fact that he has eschewed his pal Putin’s playbook of invasion, and instead suggests that his administration browbeats America’s northern neighbour through ‘economic force’, is not just relieving but encouraging. Xi Jinpingonomics has a new star student. Trump’s wish to unite Canada into a rather disunited states of America also confirms a suspicion we had held all along: that the Potus-to-bloom, who registered as a Democrat in 2001 – and remained so for eight years – is a secret Democrat in Republican clothing. Why?
Well, because Canada has had a left-leaning history with the Liberal Party (which, confusingly, shares its party colour, red, with America’s Republican Party) in power pretty much most of the 20th century, and 15 of the 24 years in the 21st. If Canada were to become a US state, it would replace California as the largest. But, most importantly, its voters are almost sure to vote ‘left’ – meaning, Democrat. Remember, Trump had told CNN in 2008, ‘It just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans.’ Talk about the Great Disruptor.
